Desensitization

Desensitization

Desensitization is defined as the diminished emotional responsiveness to a negative or aversive stimulus after repeated exposure to it. Therapists often use systematic desensitization to treat individuals with anxiety and phobias. Systematic desensitization is a therapy procedure where the relaxed, fearful person imagines a series of progressively more fearsome situations. The two responses of relaxation and fear are incompatible, and the fear is dispelled.
