Joy is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Iowa. She graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2004 with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Joy is a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association and the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association. She has experience working as an adolescent in-patient therapist at The McAuley Institute in SanFrancisco, as an outpatient therapist at a Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC) in Cedar Rapids and was in private practice in Iowa City for the past 3 years.
Joy utilizes an integrative approach to therapy which includes modalities such as: family systems, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (CBT), trauma focused, dialectical behavioral (DBT), Biofeedback and brief solution focused approaches and interventions.
She has a specialty/expertise working with adults and older adolescents dealing with a combination of emotional and social problems related to conditions that include: complex mood disorders such as cycling mood disorders, anxiety disorders including Panic DO, Generalized Anxiety DO, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), prodromal thought disorders and other abrupt onset mood disorders.
Joy is trained in biofeedback therapy and utilizes both the Nexus 10 and Alive systems to provide the most current, research-based treatment for certain psychological disorders as well as pain – related disorders. Joy is also a Reiki practitioner and incorporates meditation, essential oils and mindfulness into her practice, when appropriate.
