Joy is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Iowa. She graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2004 with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. Joy is a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) and the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association (IMHCA). She has experience working as an adolescent in-patient therapist, an outpatient therapist at a Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children (PMIC) and was in private practice in Iowa City for 3 years prior to joining Compass Clinical Associates in 2017.
Joy utilizes an integrative approach to therapy which includes modalities such as: family systems, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (CBT), trauma focused, dialectical behavioral (DBT), biofeedback and brief solution focused approaches and interventions.
She has a specialty/expertise working with adults and older adolescents dealing with a combination of emotional and social problems related to conditions that include: complex mood disorders such as cycling mood disorders, anxiety disorders including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prodromal thought disorders and other abrupt onset mood disorders.
Joy also works with clients diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. She employs heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback utilizing the Nexus 10 system to provide the most current, research-based treatment to assist this population with anxiety, pain, gastrointestinal problems, depression, panic disorder, headaches and mood variability. Other disorders that benefit from biofeedback include: obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), postpartum stress, PTSD, food cravings and insomnia.
As a supplemental therapy, Joy also utilizes an Alpha-Stim (A-Stim) machine which is an FDA proven medical device that can relieve anxiety, insomnia, headaches and depression. The device uses an electromedical technology which generates a unique patented waveform current which works on the electron level, allowing your body’s cells to return to their natural functioning state.
Joy is a very holistic clinician and incorporates mindfulness and relaxation techniques as well as meditation training. She has completed 60 hours of training in Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy in addition to 48 hours of training in nutrition and mental illness.
