Kirk grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School, Drake University with a BS in Education in 1978, and the University of Iowa with a Master’s in Social Work in 1983. He has held an Iowa license to practice since 1987. Much of his career has been at rural community mental health centers in NE Iowa and later in Dallas County, assisting people living with severe and persistent mental illness. He also staffed the Student Health Center at Drake University for fourteen years, and has been an Adjunct Lecturer in Psychology at Grandview University since 2008.

Kirk considers himself to be a generalist, and his best ‘trick’ is to have no tricks at all. He enjoys couple’s counseling in particular. He is interested is Positive Psychology…not just the absence of illness, but living a full, productive and meaningful life. He has recently re-discovered the joys of motorcycle riding, and enjoys tending his backyard orchard. His favorite listening is Charity Nebbe’s Horticulture Friday on Iowa Public Radio.
